We are proud to be the only practice in North Platte to offer this new generation of high resolution OCT technology. OCT technology has been around since 1991.  The RTVue is a Fourier-domain based OCT. This simply means it is extremely fast and accurate.  Older OCT scanners captured approximately 400 scans per second of the retina. The RTVue can capture about 26,000 scans of the retinal layers per second.  It is also allows us to see greater detail of the retina, down to 5 micron resolution. What this means to you, is we are able to identify retinal irregularities sooner and easier and with greater detail, which can lead to earlier  treatment, potentially saving vision loss.  This is very useful when following macular degneration and diabetes and other retinal diseases.  This machine can also be very useful in the earlier detection of glaucoma and other optic neuropathathies.   The RTVue can image the retinal nerve fiber layer.  This layer contains the approximately one million nerve cells that give us vision.  Glaucoma can cause thinning and loss of retinal nerve ganglion cells, and detecting this nerve fiber layer loss early can aid in early diagnosis of glaucoma.  Instigating treatment sooner, can potentially prevent vison loss many years later.
